SEMINARY HILL CIDERY

Built by Baxter and designed by River Architects, Seminary Hill Cidery is the first Passive House US (PHIUS) Certified cidery in the world.  With a barn-like design, the new $3.6M Passive Certified building is designed into the existing slope of the site.  The space features a production area, event space and tasting room in the two story, 8,500 SF Cidery.

The upper level of this facility houses a tasting room and event space, available for hosting weddings and other events. While the lower-level houses a fully functional hard-cidery production & storing area. Baxter used sustainable building practices and materials that notably feature interior/exterior facades, decking, & roof utilizing reclaimed larch wood from the old Tappan Zee Bridge. The Cidery and Tasting Room facility is designed to pass rigorous Passive House Institute US (PHIUS) standards, which provide the most cost-effective path for achieving the goal of zero-energy usage and carbon neutrality.

Some of the PHIUS components include high-performance windows and doors to capture solar energy and effectively heat and cool the building through different seasons. The airtight enclosure prevents loss of conditioned air through infiltration and improved building durability by preventing the transport of moisture into the building. The Cidery also has mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and filtered fresh air, powered by a complete solar roof assembly.
